the deal:
I’ve shepherded thousands of stories and special projects through every step of the process in a nearly 14-year career as a sports journalist, first as a general assignment reporter and editor in my early 20s all the way up to my last job managing a large group of writers and editors producing stories for clients like the Miami Herald, Chicago Tribune and Los Angeles Times.
One of my stops was at CBS, where I honed high-profile stories for CBSSports.com while editing most of the writers you see on the website every day. Editing remotely, I worked with senior management in Florida and CBS writers across the country, some on top assignments, while polishing copy for a top-100 website.
I lost my last job in July after my company was bought and closed by a rival. I saw it as an opportunity to explore new things.
I have spent most of my career in a newsroom setting, working with large groups of writers and editors, including almost four years in a managerial role. In addition to my experience in traditional work environments, I’ve reported from five Olympics as a lead writer and editor in Athens, Turin, Beijing, Vancouver and London. Not surprisingly, I consider those trips and that work the highlight of my career so far, but I am always looking ahead to what’s next.
I am an experienced writer and editor, am fluent in AP style and have a reputation as a quick study in most things. I am a genial but firm leader when given that responsibility. I prefer accuracy to quickness, but recognize the need for the latter. Nothing is more exciting to me than when both are achieved at the same time.
I am interested in full-time, part-time or freelance work and can be reached at Gerard.V.Gallagher@gmail.com. Clicking my pictures below used to take you to a selection of my work. The links died when our company closed. I have clips available upon request.
