gerard Gallagher

"I write to recommend Gerard Gallagher to you, and I do so enthusiastically. Gerard interned in the editorial department of Main Line Today magazine from January 2002 through May 2002, so he has learned a great deal about the importance of effective mass communication. His responsibilities at the magazine were many and varied, and he handled them all efficiently and with style.

"Gerard reported and wrote briefs on everything from painting to dance to canoeing to blueberries for the Almanac section of the magazine (and for another in our group, The Hunt). All of those items displayed keen analytical, critical and grammatical skills, as well as wit. Gerard's articles were so thoroughly researched and accurate, he was asked to write a story about home electronics for the regular magazine ("Crash, Boom, Bang," July 2002), for which he was paid. His help in helping to conduct and assess a survey of dental professionals for our Best Dentists feature in June 2002 was invaluable. We could not have compiled our annual list of 200 Best of the Main Line winners without him.

"Gerard's work habits are impeccable. He met all his deadlines. He performed the most menial of tasks cheerfully, and he was a positive and quietly enthusiastic presence in the office. I know Gerard to be a dedicated student of the media. His interests are many and wide-ranging, and I trust that he will go far."

"Having worked in a sports newsroom or on a copy desk for nearly 30 years, you know when a special talent joins your staff, and Gerard Gallagher fit that bill from the day we hired him as a member of our blog editing team at CBSSports.com.

"As part of that group hired to provide relief for our overworked staff, Gerard's intuition, knowledge of the subject matter and execution were instantly present. If that's all he brought to the table, his run with us would have been a win. But he also was in lock-step philosophically from Day One, all the while he was mindful of our directive to keep things moving. Unfortunately, financial constraints prevented us from maintaining the U-Desk, and we feel the effects every day.

"He demonstrated the three qualities I've always noted in exceptional editors:

-- Attention to detail
-- Encyclopedic knowledge of the subject matter
-- Intelligence to ask questions when not sure

"Frankly, we underutilized Gerard -- restricting his duties to blogs -- because I'm positive he could has stepped in as a member of our regular staff and fit in immediately. Not only would I re-hire Gerard in a second, but if he's available -- which I figure is extremely doubtful, given what he has to offer -- if/when we start bringing folks back, he can count on a phone call."
